A Simple Letter on Father's Day

Dear Daddy,

Today while walking I thought of you. I thought of you so much I decided to craft this letter. I have done it many times before but today is different. This day is new and has never existed before. Lots of refreshing thoughts of us. I was thinking about how as your only child there are no siblings with whom I can reminisce. My memories are of us are just that, from me about us. Father/Daughter, my singular narrative.

It's Father's Day... you know that holiday we set aside to honor fathers. Really every day is a day to honor fathers. I know it is something you would say. You were not much into holidays. . You used to say too much commercialization, just celebrate each day.

This year will mark 14 years since you have transitioned. I have missed you much but I so enjoyed those last years you were here with us. It was fun. We bonded more and I am more than thankful to God. I don't have one regret. God has been faithful! You would be very proud of your four granddaughters. Thats right I had one more, Amina Idris. They are all smart, confident, have unique personalities and love music like you. Their tastes are eclectic.. Reminds me of someone. We have our seasons of ebb and flow but we persevere. As a man who was constantly introspective, flawed yet resilient, you often said to me "I am proud of you" Can you believe I am still working on receiving compliments, but I am getting better. You wanted me to represent the best of you. Daddy I have tried to do just that in my life. As a daughter, a mother, sister, a friend, an educator. In my many roles I endeavor to do well, to bring honor to God and continue a legacy of "your best".

So I will say it this time. I know you would be proud of me.

Love,

Your daughter
